Lisk DAO Season 1

Executive summary

This proposal aims to fund Season 1 of Lisk DAO to accelerate the Lisk Ecosystem across five Social and Economical Intents. Season 1 will start as soon as this proposal passes and end on the same day as Optimism Season 7: June 11th, 2025. Contributors from Lisk and Super Studio, the team behind Superchain Eco, will operate this first Season through a Grants Council and Steering Committee. The total budget request for Season 1 is 3,650,000 LSK, of which 3,500,000 LSK will be allocated to builders and dApps on Lisk Mainnet.

Motivation

The proposal follows the Lisk DAO Seasons Strategy, which was approved in a previous Lisk DAO vote. It defines a clear Season program to help develop the Lisk ecosystem.

Rationale

The approval of the Lisk DAO Season 1 will provide a predictable and effective structure for the first 6 months of Lisk DAO operation in line with Superchain priorities and contribute to the development of the Lisk ecosystem while providing clear insights that will help make an informed decision on the LSK Token Burn.

Specification

Following the Lisk DAO Seasons Strategy, we propose the following setup and procedures for Lisk DAO Season 1.

Theme

The initial season of Lisk DAO will focus on establishing and nurturing an ecosystem of Lisk builders and contributors while providing key resources and support to builders aiming to grow the usage and TVL of Lisk.

As such, we propose adopting the following theme: Lisk Season 1: A Foundation for real-world acceleration.

Intents

Intent Category Key Measurables
1) Make contributing to Lisk DAO engaging and rewarding. Social (A) Make Lisk ecosystem funding more transparent, (B) Increase governance participation and rigor, (C) Educate about the economics of L2s and the operations and benefits of a Community Treasury
2) Accelerate Lisk programs and builders. Economic (A) Support key programs and builders, (B) Make it simple to discover and engage with Lisk programs and apps.
3) Grow the TVL of Lisk Economic (A) Growth of non-LSK TVL during the season.
4) Increase Liskā€™s contribution to the Superchain. Economic (A) Total revenue contributed to the Optimism Collective. (B) The total volume to and from Lisk in the Superchain.
5) Provide clear insights to help guide the LSK token burn vote. Economic (A) Creation of a mid-season and post-Season 1 Report that provides insights into LiskDAO

Season Structure

We propose for two councils to exist in the first season of LiskDAO:

  1. LiskDAO Grants Council: Tasked with operating two programs, the Builder Grants and Ecosystem Incentives.

  2. LiskDAO Steering Committee: Tasked with evaluating and reporting on the Program Results.

Season Operations

Lisk DAO Season 1 will be operated by an assigned team of Super Studio, the team behind Superchain Eco, and Lisk team members. In future seasons, we are interested in incorporating community election processes into the Season Operators role; however, because this is the first season, we believe hand-picking high-context, high-agency individuals to set a standard is the best approach.

Budget

The total budget for LiskDAO Season 1 is 3,650,000 LSK. The budget will be managed through this 3 out of 5 Superchain Safe with the 3 Steering Committee members and 2 Grants Council members as signers. Below is a breakdown of the budget per item.

Item Budget Fund Who selects projects? (Module I) Who evaluates impact? (Module H) When is impact evaluated?
Builder Grants 600K LSK Lisk DAO Treasury Lisk DAO Grants Council Steering Committee Regularly throughout Season
Builder Programs 400K LSK Lisk DAO Treasury Lisk DAO Governance Steering Committee At the end of the Season
Ecosystem Incentives 2.5M LSK Lisk DAO Treasury Lisk DAO Grants Council Steering Committee Regularly throughout Season
Lisk DAO Operations 150K LSK Lisk DAO Treasury Steering Committee Lisk Team and Lisk DAO At the end of the Season

Season 1 Programs

The first season of LiskDAO will focus on three programs.

Lisk DAO Builder Grants
Milestone-based grants of up to 75,000 LSK for projects developing new solutions and features for Lisk. The review will be based on a rubric to be created by the Grants Council in collaboration with the Steering Committee that combines Season 1 intents with the likelihood of successful execution.

Lisk DAO Builder Programs
An Individual grant that funds a single or batch of Builder Programs that contribute to the development of the Lisk ecosystem. Builder Program proposals can be flexible in scope but should be submitted for review to regular Lisk DAO Governance and report progress to the broader DAO and Steering Committee.

Lisk DAO Ecosystem Incentives
Milestone-based LSK incentives for live applications on Lisk. The review will be based on a rubric to be created by the Grants Council in collaboration with the Steering Committee, which combines Season 1 intents with the likelihood of successful execution.

Grants Council Members
The Grants Council of Season 1 will consist of the following members.

Role Member Prev Roles
Lead JashFi Superchain Eco Lead
Member Ibrahim Lisk Builder who graduated from CV Labs
Member Erwan Onchain Finance at Lisk

Steering Committee Members
The Season 1 Steering Committee will consist of the following members.

Member Current Role
LuukDAO Super Studio Founder
JashFi LiskDAO Grants Lead
Mona Governance at Lisk

Start and End Date
We propose to start Season 1 as soon as this proposal passes and to end it on June 11th, the same date as the end of Optimism Season 7.

Action plan

Once this proposal is accepted, the Grants Council and Steering Committee will kick off their workstreams, and we will activate the LiskDAO communications channels on X and Warpcast. If this proposal or the Season Strategy Proposal submitted prior does not pass - no actions will be taken.

Within 1 week after the acceptance of this proposal, the Grant and Incentive proposal should be submittable to LiskDAO.

The Season 1 mid-point report will be submitted to the Lisk Forum by the Steering Committee by April 30th, and the post-season 1 report will be submitted by June 15th.

Itā€™s very frustrating when I canā€™t read a post that has been flagged. I managed to read what Filmmaniak said. The forum mechanics need to be adjustedā€”posts should be hidden, but there should still be an option to read what the person wrote. What some see as nonsense might hold great meaning for others. Thatā€™s what a true DAO is about.

I support the proposal, but thereā€™s a lot of manipulation here. Itā€™s an entire chain of manipulations, leading to the idea that we need to preserve 100M instead of burning it. The funds from the Lisk Foundation were meant for the Lisk ecosystem, which was essentially stolen from the community. Now they are trying to convince us that we need those 100M. No, not only do we not need them, but they are actually harmful. The Lisk team, and Max in particular, should be doing everything to increase the value of Lisk, especially since 45M LSK have already been minted for the DAOā€”not to mention the 15M allocated for airdrops. Plus, another 10-15M will remain from the migration. Even if we only consider the 45M, that is more than enough to make Lisk truly greatā€”if handled wisely.

So donā€™t expect the 100M to be preserved. The community, for the most part, will vote against it for the reasons mentioned above.

Itā€™s really painful to realize that Onchain Foundation cannot keep its word and fund Klayr as promised for two years. And this happens at every stepā€”words say one thing, actions show another.

Hi Grumlin, Jash here from Superchain Eco. I was part of the team that drafted this proposal. We hear your worries, so I wanted to share some background and our perspective.

Our team has been connected to Lisk for quite some time. Luuk from our team, who aims to become part of the Steering Committee, has spent a lot of time at the Lisk Center Utrecht and has a good relationship with Jurre and the Klayr team. We have also held Lisk since the early days (pre-rebrand in 2018).

From our perspective and experience so far, I genuinely believe that all resources from this Season 1 proposal will be allocated directly to Lisk Ecosystem / Community initiatives through the mechanism we specified.

Weā€™ve supported other L1 / L2 ecosystems in the past to help them effectively utilize their treasuries to accomplish their objectives. We are convinced that a program like the one proposed can have a meaningful impact on growing and developing the Lisk ecosystem, in line with the desires of token holders.

Lisk and the Lisk DAO are entering a new stage, and weā€™re committed to making the most of it. From our perspective, the 100M decision is essential but not the primary driver of this proposal. For Lisk to grow its market share in the Superchain and wider Web3 space, we need to create an attractive environment for talented builders. We hope the Season approach will help us do that.

Hello Jash. Thank you for your explanations.

As I mentioned before:

The ā€œbutā€ indicates that I support it while keeping in mind the bigger picture, which isnā€™t entirely favorable. I want to make Lisk great again, like it was in 2018, but it seems that the Onchain Foundation wants to achieve this at the communityā€™s risk. In this situation, the Foundation itself doesnā€™t seem to take any risks. Thatā€™s the reason for my concerns.

Anyway, you will have my ā€œForā€ vote.

DAO donā€™t deserve money. Donā€™t ban my post. Constantly growing in power DAO is not good for the project.

This is a great proposal to bring in professional third-parties with DAO expertise to steer the Lisk DAO into an appropriate direction. This will show the way on what the Lisk DAO will be able to do with the 100M LSK still up for a vote to burn or not to burn.

The requested budget is affordable while ensuring impact on the outlined intents. The intents focus on making the DAO more attractive while also growing invaluable metrics for the Lisk L2.

This proposal has my vote. Thanks for creating it. :white_check_mark:

After conversing with various Lisk stakeholders and having meetings with existing initiatives we made some final updates to this proposal:

  1. To further align and bring the various Lisk accelerator and incubator programs closer to LiskDAO weā€™ve separated the Lisk Builder grants into two verticals: Direct builder grants managed by the Grants Council and Builder Programs to be proposed and operated by Lisk-aligned third parties to be approved by LiskDAO. The overall Grant budget remains the same.
  2. Added the Lisk Superchain Multisig address that will be used to coordinate Season 1. All spending can be viewed here and will be tracked in accounting sheets to be included in the Season 1 reports.

We aim to submit this proposal for a vote tomorrow when 14 days of feedback and iterations have passed following the Lisk DAO guidelines.

Iā€™ll vote in favor, but I have a few remarks. I donā€™t want to sound rude or patronizing in any way, but please be mindful when selecting projects under Builder Grants and Ecosystem Incentives. Thereā€™s no shame in having very few projects, or even just one, selected per season. All the funds that the DAO controls come from holdersā€™ money generated through dilution, and theyā€™ve already suffered significantly price-wise. Letā€™s not turn this grant program into a marketing stunt just to show off numbers. Thank you!

Thank you, @przemer, for such valuable remarks. I fully support them with both hands and feet. The first season will be a test run, and Iā€™ll also be closely watching how and where the funds are spent. If anything seems off, Iā€™ll vote against it in the following seasons. Thanks for understanding!

Lisk DAO give our money back.

The following reflects the views of L2BEATā€™s governance team, composed of @kaereste and @Sinkas, based on their combined research, fact-checking, and ideation.

Weā€™re voting FOR this proposal.

Having supported the concept of ā€˜Seasonsā€™ in the previous vote, this seems like a logical next step that provides a clear roadmap to accelerate Liskā€™s ecosystem over the next six months.

The three programs outlined for Season 1 are logical, and the proposed intents can help narrow the scope of applications to create a focused impact. We like the rosters of the steering committee and the grants council, and weā€™re particularly excited to see the Foundation (Mona) taking an active role in the former.

Hi all, weā€™re excited to have the Lisk DAO Season 1 proposal pass. Weā€™ll fine tune the last thing in the coming days before opening up for applications.

We share your perspective on being rigorous in our review @grumlin @przemer. This first season is a trial, and we donā€™t feel the pressure to allocate the maximum budgets unless we believe thereā€™s sufficient quality and impact created by the approved projects.
